Polyurethane vs. Rubber Rollers: Material Selection Guide

공유:

For production equipment, roller cost should be evaluated across the full operating cycle: purchase price, changeover labor, downtime, scrap, cleaning and the effect of dimensional wear on line performance.

Rubber and polyurethane are broad material families, and neither has a universal service-life advantage. The result depends on compound chemistry, hardness, load, speed, heat build-up, fluids, surface finish and the actual 자재 이송 failure mode.

Use the comparison below to define the application data and test evidence required before changing roller material.

1. Abrasion and Surface-Wear Performance

Abrasion can reduce roller diameter, change traction and affect tracking. The wear mechanism varies with the counterface, pressure, speed, debris and compound.

ISO 4649 can support comparative abrasion testing, but results from one rubber or polyurethane grade should not be generalized to every compound. Compare candidate materials using the same method and representative operating conditions.

2. Load, Compression Set and Heat Build-Up

Both rubber and polyurethane can develop compression set or flat spotting when load, contact area, temperature and dwell time exceed the capability of the selected compound.

Evaluate compression set, hysteresis and recovery under the actual load and duty cycle. For AGVs and heavy conveyors, also specify wheel or roller geometry, line speed, start-stop pattern and allowable deformation. Review our heavy-duty polyurethane idler rollers for belt conveyors.

3. Oil, Chemical and Cleaning-Agent Compatibility

Fluid resistance is chemistry-specific. Oils, solvents, cleaners, water and process chemicals can cause swelling, softening, cracking or bond damage in either material family.

Request compatibility data for the exact compound, concentration, temperature and exposure time. Where failure carries significant risk, validate the material with representative immersion or service testing.

4. Total Cost of Ownership for Roller Procurement

A lower purchase price does not always produce the lowest operating cost, but a higher-priced material is not automatically the better investment.

Build the comparison from measured service intervals, changeover time, downtime cost, repair options, scrap risk and inventory requirements.

Bonding and core preparation also affect roller reliability. See the polyurethane roller technical procurement FAQ for failure-analysis and RFQ details.

5. Application Comparison: Define a Controlled Trial

Before replacing rubber with polyurethane, document the current roller grade, dimensions, service interval and failure mode. Select a candidate from the actual load, speed, traction, heat, cleaning and chemical requirements.

Run a controlled trial on a defined number of rollers and monitor diameter loss, surface damage, temperature, vibration, bond condition, tracking and hours in service.

Compare both materials against agreed acceptance criteria. Record operating conditions so the result can be repeated and used for a wider rollout decision.

Which Roller Material Fits Your Line?

Polyurethane may be a strong candidate for abrasion, load or fluid exposure, while rubber may be preferred for heat dissipation, flexibility, damping or a specific friction requirement. Select from measured conditions, not a universal ranking.

Provide the core material, dimensions, hardness or grip target, load, speed, duty cycle, temperature, fluids, surface finish, tolerances and observed failure mode for an engineering review.

자주 묻는 질문

폴리우레탄 롤러는 식품에 안전한가요?

Food-contact suitability requires a specific, documented formulation and an assessment of the intended contact conditions. Review the available food-grade polyurethane documentation, then confirm the grade, declaration and application requirements before ordering.

PU 롤러를 재코팅할 수 있나요?

Worn rollers can often be recoated when the metal core passes dimensional, material and damage inspection. Savings depend on stripping, machining, core condition, quantity and logistics, so compare a recoating quotation with a new-core option.

폴리우레탄 롤러는 일반적으로 얼마나 오래 사용하나요?

There is no reliable universal lifespan. Track hours or cycles under defined load, speed, temperature, media and maintenance conditions, then use the recorded failure mode and service interval for future specifications.
